SENTENCE CORRECTION


1.1 Introduction to Sentence Correction

§  Sentence Correction questions are based on the correct usage of grammar. They are included in the verbal ability to check the proficiency of the student in using the grammar correctly.

§  The questions asked in this section are based not only on the fundamentals of grammar but also on correct usage of various words.

§  The students find it difficult to crack these because they are not familiar with the subtle nuances of the language.

1.2 Types of Questions in SC

SC involves the following types of question:

§  Choose the grammatically correct sentence.
§  Choose the grammatically incorrect sentence.
§  Replace the underlined portion with grammatically correct option.
§  Spot the error.

To solve the questions based on grammar, one must not only learn the basics of grammar, but also the correct usage in the sentence.

1.3. Tools of Sentence Correction

The following are the tools of sentence correction:

DIRECT & INDIRECT OR REPORTED SPEECH You can answer the question What did he/she say? in two ways: §   by repeating the words spoken (direct speech) §   by reporting the words spoken (indirect or reported speech). Direct Speech Direct speech repeats, or quotes, the exact words spoken. When we use direct speech in writing, we place the words spoken between quotation marks (" ") and there is no change in these words. We may be reporting something that's being said NOW (for example a telephone conversation), or telling someone later about a previous conversation.
